Question: Best Place for Pediatric Cancer Treatment?

The options we have in mind, because we have heard they are best, are:
---ST.JUDE'S CHILDREN'S RESEARCH HOSPITAL
---CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL OF PHILADELPHIA(CHOP)
or we can stay in our home hospital(Miami Children's Hospital). She is currently at MCH, she has stage 3 high risk Neuroblastoma. We have some time, and so far we are looking into St.Jude's. We would like some words of knowledge from those who have been through this before, and have been to any one of the three, to see which is the best for our 8 year old daughter.
Thank you and God bless :)

Answer: I answer as someone who works in the field of pediatric oncology. Both St. Jude and CHOP are good hospitals. Is there a problem staying where you are, though? Miami Children's is a COG center. COG (Children's Oncology Group) is the world's largest childhood cancer research organization. They create many of the treatment protocols and run many of the studies. You can be assured that you will be getting the standard of care with Miami Children's, as they follow the COG protocols. All of the doctors at COG institutions communicate with each other. Actually, the field of childhood cancer is pretty small, and the doctors (COG and non-COG) all consult with each other frequently.

St. Jude and CHOP are both COG institutions, though St. Jude does run their own studies and design their own protocols, as well. The treatment at both may be exactly what your daughter is receiving/will receive at Miami. That really tuns it into an issue of convenience and comfort. Neuroblastoma treatment can be lengthy and rough; where will your family be able to settle down and have support?

It's not an easy decision! If you are comfortable where you are, maybe you just want to reach out to the other hospitals for second opinions, with the intent on staying unless someone comes back with something radically different. If you're not comfortable where you are, then you do need to find a place you feel better with.
