Question: How do American people call the home when they share in a community way?

I mean, I remembered I lived in USA and it's normal to see foreign people that share their appartment with different assignments each of them, someones cook others buy the things, and they share the quote of the rent.
It's curious that they're in with different proposals, different stages of life but they share their physical space.

Just want to know how do you call this kind of homes.

Answer: Boarding house - one big house, separate bedrooms, one kitchen, share a bathroom
Commune - one big property - unrelated people living together as family, growing their own vegetables, etc.
Having roommate/roomie or housemate.
