Home Staging Manager

Question: Saying "Macbeth" onstage! What do you think of this superstition?

To be honest I think it's silly. But I must say that I spoke that word once and the next day a kid in our cast came to rehearsal in a cast and most of the rest of us got the flu and our stage manager's back went out and he had to do the show while laying on his back. We were supposed to take the show on tour but needless to say there were too many problems so we stayed home. I still don't think my uttering that word had anything to do with it.
I've read somewhere that the reason people think it's bad luck is because the play itself is just plain dangerous to perform. Over the years many people have been hurt, many seriously because it's so violent.

Answer: Yes, a lot of people think it is bad luck. I have worked with a director who had a very successful production of Macbeth, and consequently felt it was good luck. When I worked on a different production with him, he said Macbeth loudly during rehearsals a number of times. The show was critically acclaimed and had full houses for all of the run!
