Question: I need some advice (FAST) in dealing with my new ferret!!!?
i just got a new ferret 2 days ago and in the petstore he was nice and cuddly and such. when i brought him home was when he started biting more. i personally only have gotten bitten twice but almost anyone that holds him gets a bite! i live in massachusetts and havent been able to find a store that sells the (bitter spray to put on your hands) and need to know ways to teach him not to bite. im not scared of him.. i just dont want him to bite and when he goes through his little angry stage, after i stop playing with him and put him back in the cage due to his biting ( he basically flipps out and starts biting and scratching at the door as if he wants to come out) i get a little scared to reach in and pick him up again. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE help me to teach him how to not bite, i dont want him biting my 3 year old sister who LOVES him.
Answer: What you're calling an 'angry stage' is really called the ferret war dance. That is him trying to PLAY. He is not biting to be agressive. What you need to do is to stop playing with him directly with your hands. Use a stuffed animal for play, that he can bite and tackle, and then give him treats and stuff to lick off of your hands so he knows that he can't bite them.
Another good thing to do would be to GET HIM A FRIEND! He's trying to play with you so much because he doesn't have another ferret to play with! Ferrets are EXTREMELY social creatures and are MUCH happier when they aren't alone.
PLEASE DON'T HIT/FLICK YOUR FERRET! Even the smallest little tap will teach your ferret that hands are something to be AFRAID of and will cause him to bite you MORE! Also, putting something spicy on your hands will make him SICK. Viniger is alright, although I doubt it will really work.
Still, even if you follow this he will likely catch you sometimes. What you should do in this case is GENTLY take him by the scruff, the loose skin on the back of his neck, and slowly drag his behind back and forth over the floor a few times. Do NOT shake him, just drag him like this. This is what a mother ferret would do to discipline her babies for biting too hard.
SOME ferrets are just naturally a little bitey, and it may take a LONG time for him to get the idea, so prepared to repeat this process for months. There really is no quicker way.
(Kreed and Dazzling are the only other people who have halfway decent answers, please ignore all the other people. They are very wrong.)
