Question: What is the best flea repellent for dogs?
I've heard K9 Advantix, Advantage, Frontline Plus, Revolution... Many to choose from. I am looking for something safe and the best quality. My dogs have never had a flea problem, but we've moved and now that the colder months are setting in, it seems the fleas are trying to find themselves a home before the winter comes. I heard Revolution will break the cycle of fleas after 3 months, killing all stages. Does the others do the same?
They are both 80pd dogs. Chesapeake Bay Retrievers/Lab Mix.
Answer: Advantix kills and prevents fleas in all life stages for one month. It also kills and prevent ticks and mosquitos (mosquitos can transmit heartworms so it offers more protection when used with a monthly heartworm preventive like Heartgard or Interceptor) Revolution kills and prevents fleas, some tick species, heartworms and some intestinal parasites. I'd go with either a combo of Advantix and a monthly heartworm preventive or stick with Revolution alone. My dogs are personally on either heartgard or interceptor along with Advantix. I feel a bit safer giving them a oral heartworm prevetive rather than a topical one (Revolution). Heartgard and interceptor also treat and control some intestinal parasites. Dogs with a current flea infestation should ideally be dewormed with something like Drontal to kill tapeworms. Tapeworms can be transmitted by ingesting a flea infected with tapeworm eggs.
