Question: Is passport needed to apply for EAD during the I-485 stage?
My H1-B is valid till dec 31st, 2007. From Jan 3rd, Iam planning to work with EAD. I need to apply for EAD tomorrow, but lost my passport yesterday. Getting a new passport takes atleast 2 months at my home country's consulate here in usa.
I have applied I-485 couple of months back. Does anyone know whether we need passport to apply for EAD? I just remember only my passport number but that passport is now lost. I have filed a complaint at local police station and also informed my home country consulate.
I know that we need passport for the next H-1B, but Since I have applied for I-485 and am planning to use EAD, do we still need passport to apply for EAD?
Answer: At least, here's what the USCIS says:
A copy of your last EAD (front and back). If no priorEAD has been issued, you must submit a copy of afederal government issued identity document, such as apassport showing your picture, name, and date of birth; abirth certificate with photo ID; a visa issued by a foreignconsulate; or a National ID document with photo and/orfingerprint. The identity document photocopy mustclearly show the facial features of the applicant and thebiographical information.
