Question: Am I feeding enough for my pup - Canidae?
My pom 5mths. on Canidae all life stages. On the back of the package it says 2-10lbs pups are to be fed 1-2cups - 1 1/2 cup daily. I forgot my pom is 4.5 lbs. I'm feeding her 1/4 per meal, 3 meals a day. The reason why i'm asking this is because the first vet trip I went with her, she weighed 3 lbs. By 2 weeks, she weighed 4.5lbs so.. I thought she was gaining pounds massivly and she did look a bit fatter infact, she is. When I took her home, she was rather scrawny. The breeder said she will approx weigh about 6lbs. So.. the back of the package reads for the adult section 2 - 10lbs are to be fed 1/4 - 1/2 cup daily? It sounds odd, but okay? so am I feeding my dog too less? or too mcuh? 1/4 x 3 meals = 1/2 cup a day?
Uhm, jane she's not 4.5lbs at 2 weeks, she gained from 3-4.5lbs in 2 weeks

Answer: This is a rule of thumb. Rub your fingers lightly down the dogs side. If you feel the Ribs a little then your dog is likely in prime health. If you don't feel the ribs at all then you MIGHT be feeding too much. If you feel the ribs a lot then you MIGHT be feeding too little. Ask a vet. It sounds about right to me though, it is a young small dog and dogs really don't need as much feed as you think. I recommend avoiding foods with a lot of corn or corn byproducts in them, go for foods with rice instead, it has more protein and is more healthy for them.
